Emergency mud line clearance on a North Sea platform

Emergency clearance of a blocked mud line on a North Sea platform – equipment mobilised in under 12 hours, line restored over a single weekend, and six-figure daily losses avoided through engineered high-pressure jetting.

Sector: Offshore oil & gas – drilling / production
Location: North Sea
Client: Major operator
Services: High-pressure jetting, line clearance, emergency response

Overview

A North Sea operator suffered a critical obstruction in a 40 ft, 8-inch mud line, forcing operations to slow and driving estimated losses in the six figures per day. The blockage – a mix of sludge and hardened cement – needed to be cleared fast, safely and without damaging the line.

Sureclean deployed a rapid-response mud line clearance solution using high-pressure jetting and advanced tooling, restoring the line to full service within the same weekend and helping the client avoid further high-value downtime.

The Challenge

The operator was facing:

  • A blocked 40 ft mud line with sludge and hardened cement
  • Significant daily financial losses as operations were constrained
  • The need for a fast, engineered solution that would clear the line without causing damage
  • Limited time: the work had to be completed over a tight weekend window

Sureclean’s objective was simple: return the mud line to full operational status, as quickly and safely as possible.

Sureclean’s Solution

At 08:30 on a Saturday, Sureclean received the go-ahead. Leveraging our large offshore fleet and agile operations, we:

  • Mobilised equipment to site in under 12 hours, ready to start work the same day
  • Deployed a specialist crew offshore by Sunday
  • Used high-pressure jetting (8,000–12,000 psi) with advanced internal tooling to attack the obstruction
  • Adopted a phased approach, first breaking down sludge and then tackling hardened cement
  • Adapted methods in real time as the line conditions changed, ensuring full clearance rather than a partial fix

Throughout the operation, risk was tightly controlled with appropriate permits, pressure testing and continuous communication between onshore and offshore teams.

Results

The intervention delivered a clear outcome:

  • The mud line was fully restored to normal functionality, allowing operations to resume without further delay
  • The operator avoided ongoing operational losses running into six figures per day
  • Downtime was minimised through fast mobilisation and efficient execution over a single weekend
  • The project demonstrated how engineering-led HP jetting can solve complex blockages without invasive mechanical intervention

The client later commented that the onshore support, offshore crew and equipment were all “top class”, reinforcing Sureclean’s reputation as a trusted emergency response partner.

What this shows about Sureclean

This campaign shows how Sureclean’s scale, speed and technical capability combine when it matters most:

  • Largest, ready-to-mobilise offshore fleet enabling sub-12-hour response times
  • Engineered HP jetting solutions tailored to the specific blockage, not a one-size-fits-all approach
  • A focus on rapid, risk-controlled return to productivity, not just “cleaning a line”

When blocked lines threaten high-value production, Sureclean turns a critical problem into a fast, controlled recovery.
