Sureclean is continuing its drive to further enhance its waste treatment capabilities through involvement with Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).
KTP helps businesses and organisations to improve competitiveness
and/or productivity through the use of the knowledge, technology and
skills that reside within academic institutions.
Funded by Government organisations, led by the Technology Strategy Board, KTP supports the forming of a partnership between a company (known as the company partner) and an academic institute (known as the knowledge base partner), to combine business and academic/research skills and expertise in the collaborative development of innovative business processes.
Sureclean is committed to the development of new waste treatment technologies and methodologies to minimise environmental impacts and reduce costs. John Barron, MD of Sureclean said "No one organisation has access to all the necessary skills, expertise and knowledge and, through involvement in KTP, we seek to access a wider range of skills and knowledge to assist in developing better treatments for waste streams and more environmentally friendly disposal processes."
"Our aim is to provide clients with a total treatment package which processes varying quantity mixes of both solid and liquid waste across a range of treatment levels. At the same time we look to provide substantial and measurable improvements and introduce additional solutions and diversity into our treatment operations."
"Our KTP project is specifically geared towards:
- creation of mobile, modular treatment facilities which can be operated within clients' sites;
development of a combined liquid/solid waste treatment system which will become the leading technology-led process within the market sector;
- treatment efficiencies when providing services to clients, benefiting all parties and the environment;
- providing access to new national markets and attracting new clients through the provision of a total waste treatment service, flexible at the point of delivery;
- creating a fully verified ‘one-stop' treatment system and methodology that exceeds current legislative standards and is pre-emptive of potential future demands."
Sureclean's KTP Associate, Ling Say Wong, joined Sureclean in June 2007, and continues to work closely with Robert Gordon University (the academic partner).
Prior to this Ling Say obtained a BSc in Chemistry and Pharmacology from Dundee University and an MSc in Industrial and Environmental Management from Abertay University. Ling Say is currently working towards a PhD in Sustainable Development of Integrated Solid Waste and Waste Water Treatment at RGU
As part of her assignment with Sureclean, Ling Say is working towards a Certificate of Technical Competence Level 4 in Waste Management Operations - Managing Treatment Hazardous Waste and Waste Management Operations - Managing Transfer Hazardous Waste. In addition, as part of Ling Say's ongoing involvement with RGU, she is responsible for mentoring 3 MSc students.
Ling Say said "I'm involved in reviewing Sureclean's current water treatment systems to expand our understanding of capabilities whilst seeking future opportunities for water/solid treatment using the latest technologies. This involves me in the design and installation of a waste water treatment plant, assisting in the management of the Waste Transfer Station and handling day-to-day enquiries regarding waste materials."
"I have just completed my first year of the KTP project and reported on new technologies, current legislation and potential new waste streams available to Sureclean. I have also, with the aid of the MSc students at RGU, put Sureclean's Advanced Water Treatment System (SAWTS), which removes hydrocarbon as well as bacteria and provides a "final polish" to contaminated water, "under the microscope" as it were. The aim being to identify improvement opportunities and expand operating parameters thereby adding value to our clients by providing efficient and increasingly effective water treatment services."
John Barron said "We are very happy with Ling Say's input to date and she's become a valued member of the Sureclean environmental team. Her appointment is testimony to how the KTP scheme can successfully combine academic and operational knowledge in the area of R&D, taking the challenges presented and providing practical and workable leading-edge solutions."
