Corrosion is the breaking down of essential properties in a material due to reactions with its surroundings. Most structural alloys corrode from exposure to moisture in the air but the process can be strongly affected by exposure to other substances.
Some anti-corrosion efforts merely redirect the damage into less visible, less predictable forms. Painting, plating and the application of enamel are the most common treatments, providing a barrier of corrosion-resistant material between the damaging environment and the structural material.
UHP (Ultra High Pressure) water jetting can prove to be the safest and most cost-effective method of prolonging the shelf life of assets and their surfaces. UHP water jetting units flush out solid foreign matter and any soluble contaminants such as grease or oil, giving the best possible surface for re-coating or painting.
Areas of use for Sureclean's Zone I, II and Norsok standard jetting units on board oil platforms and drilling rigs are typically walkways, heli-decks, bulkheads, pipeworks, hazardous areas and areas on which produced waste containment has proved troublesome in the past.
Accessories, with environmental, time-saving and safety considerations, include Deckblast (horizontal surfaces), Aquablast (vertical surfaces) and, most recently, remote-controlled Mantaray attachments, which, when coupled with vacuum recovery equipment, reduce the impact on the environment by containing waste/washings for further treatment by filtration or separation and safe disposal. Additionally jetting units can be modified to prepare, for example, external surfaces and, through a choice of attachments, internal surfaces of pipeworks.
Sureclean's fleet of over 50 UHP and HP jetting units will be complemented by 6 new UHP jetting units due for delivery in May 2008. Demand for these units has increased significantly and the company continues to develop and invest in the most reliable and user-/environmentally-friendly units.
Sureclean are particularly proud of a recent project on Rowan Drilling's Gorilla V rig. Supply of a UHP jetting unit with accessories, engineering capabilities and provision of onsite training (to Water Jetting Association standard) to Rowan Drilling personnel enabled full utilisation of the unit, culminating in a highly successful 6 month surface preparation and re-coating programme. Rig Manager Steve Mellor commented "We protected the integrity of a wide range of the rig's assets and surfaces with little or no impact on operations, safety or the environment".
